Please ignore my previous message; I had messed up my pdflatex/config (for all 
fonts).

Anyway, I've done a few more experiments regarding illustrations.  PDF output 
>from TeXShop can be opened, with all symbols intact, using Appleworks 6.2 
(!!!)  I tried both mathtime and the standard Computer Modern symbols.  These 
files can't be opened at all in Freehand 10.  Appleworks gives the impression 
that you can make a drawing incorporating the typeset material.  However, when 
you preview the document as PDF< the typeset material is missing. .......
