Ah I tried that one on another machine were I hadn't changed anything but
it said

[localhost:~] mmurray% defaults read texshop markerred
Aug 09 20:37:58 defaults[5678]
The domain/default pair of (texshop, markerred) does not exist


I think there is nothing there until you change it.  Not
my usual understanding of `default' !

I also looked at

TeXShop.plist


but couldn't see anything.
