Hi David,

there are a few problems with your setup:

You installed TeX Live upstream into /usr/local/texlive/2017, but
what you are running is:

> texhash: Updating /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXLIVEDIST...
> texhash: Updating /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXMFMAIN...
> texhash: Updating /var/lib/texmf/ls-R...

Debian/Ubuntu packages of TeX Live.

If you want to run the Upstream, please:
* add the correct path (see other emails)
* maybe if you are low on disk space, build an equivs packages and
remove all of the distribution TeX Live packages.

Now for the fonts, which is actually the smae problem.

> $ sudo updmap-sys --force --enable Map=lucida.map

The force should not e necessary. The rest *should* work depending
on where you did install the fonts.

The *better* way is here: http://tug.org/texlive/scripts-sys-user.html
Basically put the fonts into TEXMFLOCAL, and manually write the
	Map lucida.map
line into TEXMFLOCAL/web2c/updmap.cfg

> $ tex testfont
> This is TeX, Version 3.14159265 (TeX Live 2015/Debian) (preloaded
                                   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
As you see, you are running TeX Live from Debian

> Name of the font to test = ecrm1095

Adn you don't have texlive-fonts-recommended installed.

Till now there is no problem with lucida fonts, though.

All th best

Norbert
