I also have Lucida on Ubuntu (and Mac, my main OS), and I haven't
found any problem compiling with pdfLaTeX.

In the past, before forward and inverse search with PDF came to the
Mac (with TeXShop first and now, multiplatform, with TeXworks and
synctex) I used Kile and Kdvi as well on the Mac. I tried to install
Kile on Ubuntu (just to remember the good old times), but
unfortunately Synaptic wants me to install texlive (2007), and I
already have TeXLive 2008 (manually installed) ---it's a bummer to
tell apt-get ``you don't know better, just install it''.

Anyway, maybe mktexkp hasn't been able to make the pk fonts that (I
think) Kdvi needs to display the DVI. I tried with TeXmaker (that uses
Evince to display the DVI) and got

and a lot like that. As you can see, it (TeXmaker? Evince?) doesn't
know where to look for ---it should be /usr/local/texlive/2008...,
not /usr/share... nor /usr/local/share...

So, first ---have you tried with pdfLaTeX to see if you get a good
PDF? If so, then Lucida is rightly installed, and the problem might be
with the pk creation.

Which TeXLive are you using? And not what you're asking, but, don't
you rather use pdfLaTeX?

Best,

Axel
