Ulrike, thanks for the reply. I suspect my problem is that the KaiTi
typeface does include a glyph for the rounded double happiness 囍.

This code works:

  \documentclass[2p5]{article}
  \usepackage{polyglossia}
    \setdefaultlanguage{english}
  \usepackage{luatexja-fontspec}
  \newfontfamily\Chinese{KaiTi}
  \begin{document}

  The unrounded ligatured double happiness glyph prints without a
  problem. For example: \symbol{"56CD}

  The problem is that I cannot identify and load a typeface that
  contains a glyph for the rounded version of 囍. Its Unicode
  is 1F264, but \symbol{"1F264} fails to dispaly.

  \end{document}

I could not use albatross to identify a typeface because I could not
find a rounded glyph to paste into it. My default typefaces
lack the glyph.
