[luatex] status.shell_escape broken in texlive 2017

I just got 43919 from mirror.hmc.edu, but trying to compile this with
lualatex:
---------mwe.tex--------------
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{minted}

\begin{document}

z

\end{document}
------------------------------

still gives me:

$ lualatex --shell-escape mwe.tex
[...]
! Package minted Error: You must invoke LaTeX with the -shell-escape flag.

I also get the same error with -shell-escape (viz. one hyphen before
the 'shell-escape' flag.
