No, not really. I don't believe in complete backward compatibility
anyway. My only concern is to avoid confusion. I have passed hours
to explain people that the fact that latex is using "pdftex" as the
underlying engine doesn't mean that you can't produce a dvi. And I
have seen longish discussions about the difference between the
engine "pdftex" and "pdfTeX" (meaning plain format).

I'm not generating dvi much, but in certain cases it is useful. E.g.
to test if a font problem is on the "tex" side or the driver side.
With xetex I sometimes use xetex --no-pdf and generate a (complete
useless) xdv only to shorten compilations step currently not needed.
And there is still pstricks.
