  As one who had the most stupid problems with BSD sed at work recently, and
finally settled to install GNU sed because it was too much pain figthing with
both variants over a tiny detail, I'd advocate that, too.  (Actually I even had
it twice, once in December and once just this afternoon, when I had to install
GNU sed on my boss' machine -- again :-)
