What did you use to do the installation ?
Did you use fink or an iInstaller or just get it yourself
from www.latex2html.org and follow the INSTALL instructions ?

> [shodan:~/Sites/online/hierarchy] aharwood% latex2html rhier.tex
> Error: No such image type ''.

This looks like no image-types were specified at installation time.
There should have been messages concerning this, written to the
terminal window as the installation was done.
Look for the file config.log , or for empty entries in cfgcache.pm
in the directory from which the installation took place.
( Use locate config.log to find these.)

Do you have the netpbm utilities ?
(from www.sourceforge.net/projects/netpbm
--- I recommend using version 9.25
as version 10.1 is not sufficiently stable yet)

It looks to me like you may have installed without the netpbm utilities.
Get them, install them, then reinstall LaTeX2HTML.

That should fix it.
