[l2h] feature or bug?

Is this an undocumented feature?

When I'm trying to convert:

$\mathbf{U\Lambda U^\mathrm{T}}$

l2h complains with: ? brace missing for \^or _
and renders the T not in the exponent but on the baseline.

(LaTeX has no problem with this expression.)

l2h renders the expression correct, when I enclose the \mathrm{T} in =
braces, but it took me nearly two hours to find this!
