Yes. Changing more than once is bound to be tricky,
especially if you deepen the level, then reduce it again.

The reason is that the navigation is added at the end,
and uses the current value of $MAX_SPLIT_DEPTH at that time.

I'd guess that it's important to have this parameter having
its maximum value at the end of the document, else some
pages will not be given a navigation panel.


If you do tests of this kind, please check that all other pages are 
correctly linked via the navigation panels.
I would not be surprised to see the "next" links of some pages
linking to (non-split) subsections on the same HTML page.


As I said earlier, I haven't developed this concept at all,
apart from verify that some simple documents seem to work OK.
