[l2h] strange math symbol error

Hi there,

when converting the \approx symbol, I get an image wich looks like

     =1

instead of \approx.. see, e.g.,

	  http://www.ias-2001.ethz.ch/first/first-node2.html

I'd be grateful for any hint...
