[l2h] alltt strange interaction

Using the latest l2h (99.2beta8), the following file illustrates a
strange interaction.

Without the \usepackage, l2h produces the output I would expect. With
it, a space mysteriously appears between the $ and the following
word. I believe that this is a fairly recently introduced feature
