[l2h] fatal LaTeX

Folks,
Here is a little oddity. The following command runs fine in LaTeX (at
least does not throw any errors) but is completely pathalogic for
latex2html:
\newcommand\bs{\char '134 } % A backslash character for \tt font
The error is that there are braces missing around the \bs, but the result is
a weird html file that basically puts the entire LaTeX source inside a
<BODY> </BODY> pair, e.g.,
<BODY >
documentclass[11pt]article
usepackagehtml
usepackagefancyhdr
oddsidemargin .4in
topmargin 0.0in
textwidth 6.0in
par
textheight 8.5in
par
.
.
.
.
Anyone who knows the program and Perl better than I have any guesses as to
the nature of the problem?
Cheers
Rob
