[l2h] Removing prefix from short index

I am using 98.2beta8 with $SHORT_INDEX = 1; and $AUTO_PREFIX = 1;
This creates index hyperlinks like the following example that comes
from an \index command in file simple.tex section 1.1:
        simple-.1
I would like to remove the prefix from the index hyperlinks and add
the chapter number so that the
hyperlink is only a chapter.section number, like 1.1 which is produced
when I change $AUTO_PREFIX to 0.  But I need to keep $AUTO_PREFIX set
to get the prefix on my files.  Is there a way to do this, or could
such a feature be added?
