Yes, you are right. We are aiming at making kannadaTeX available on all 
possible platforms. The way TeX / LaTeX are written to enable a new 
language is not difficult at all - you only need to get a good set of 
metafont glyphs and the rest is easy. Thus even right now we have a 
kannadaTeX on linux but creating the input file is what is missing. On MSW 
this problem has many nice solutions including Baraha which is free.

We are trying emacs and yudit but have not sorted out the correct way to 
enable Indian languages satisfactorily yet. We will be happy if any on the 
list have tried it out successfully. Actually, I have got the devnagari 
environment working on emacs. But the problem is the TeX commands will be 
in english and switching between languages does not look easy.

In addition, a couple of groups of students are working on creating new
editors for Indian languages where we can see what we are typing and
switching between various languages will be easy - the day will be when
the text on a currency note (of value > Re.1) in all langauges can be
keyed-in in the same editor!. We will share our successes and problems on
this list.
