This basically is a follow-up to the message

I have seen the same issue (example attached) when ordering a print on
demand book recently. The book was created on Fedora 39 with texlive,
pdflatex and the gentium package with type 1 fonts. I wasn't able to
reproduce the issue with any pdf viewer available to me nor with my own
laser printer.
When trying to understand the issue I found the discussion thread at the
link above. Unfortunately, I have no information about hardware/software
used by the print on demand service, and they are not going to spend
more effort on analyzing the problem. So the only solution for me was to
replace gentium with a different font.
However, I found one more prominent evidence of the problem. The printed
copy of the "LaTeX Companion, Third Edition - Part II" by Frank
Mittelbach shows an example of the Gentium Plus font on page 45 that
actually has the same issue (I haven't seen this on first sight, but now
knowing about it and with a magnifier glass it is quite easy to spot).
