[fptex] amstex from inside emacs

I am using the emacs supplied on the TeXLive 7 CD.  I did a quick 
install of TeXLive and all works find except processing an amstex file 
from inside emacs.
I can latex a file by opening the file in emacs clicing on Command and 
from the drop down menu selecting latex.  However, when I select amstex 
from this menu I get the following error message (my file is named 
"matrix.tex"
