You should be able to replace it with the appropriate :

kpsewhich -progname="program" -mode="metafont mode" -show-path="type"

-progname if there is a -n option in your kpsepath command
-mode if there is a -m option

"program" is the program you want to act like.
"type" is found in the list reported by "kpsewhich --help".
