I just would like to see more people using fptex and despite it 0.x.x
version number, it's quite stable. The maintainer has done a good job. I
switch from miktex to fptex because I'd like to use a un*x compatible
version as I use tetex/linux at home.

In this respect, I would like to see the binary archive (which is
currently 60+ Mb self-install) be broken up so that it's easier to
download. Maybe the packages can be divided into categories such as:
essential/required, suggested/nice-to-have, optional etc. Miktex is
distributed in this way. I'm no expert in packaging software (or in tex)
but I am willing to help (and learn); or is this already in the
pipeline?

May I suggest that it be included in the default texmf.cnf, with pfe as
an example and commented out perhaps.
