True Type Fonts

Firstly sorry if this has already been answered elsewhere

I am trying to use a true type font in pdftex (using fptex version 0.4)
I have run ttf2afm to produce an .afm file.
When I run afm2tfm I get the following:
! no Adobe characters
% LIGKERN ff l =: ffl:
^

and an empty tfm file.
I have tried this with several true type fonts but always get the same result
Anybody any ideas

I am using version 8.1 of afm2tfm.
