One can extract the font called "Palatino-Italic" from rm-epstopdf.pdf.
Among other things, the font contains:

/FullName (URW Palladio L Italic) readonly def
/FamilyName (URW Palladio L) readonly def
/FontName /Palatino-Italic def

So it is pretty clear that Walter was right. GS embeds Palladio but
changes /FontName appropriately.
