The syntax is identical to that of \add. As for an example of use, you
could consider the following (taken from latin.mtx):

\moveup{\max{0}{\sub{\height{#1}}{\int{xheight}}}}
\movert{\add{\sub{\scale{\width{#1}}{#3}}{\scale{\width{#2}}{500}}}

\glyph{#2}{1000}
\pop

}
There is a \max on the third line.
