[biblio] special characters in year field in cite mode

hi,

i'm using a modification of apalike.bst. i want to include the original
publication year in the year field as follows: 2003[1903]. it does appear
correctly in the reference list, but when citing in-text, special
characters such as brackets are skipped, getting as a result: 20031903. i
believe it's the purify$ function which does that, but if i remove it from
the calc.label function i get a question mark as a result for the citation
(reference list remains ok).

can anyone give me a clue? thanks.
