Hi,
after some discussion, Olaf Weber and I have decided that it would be a
good idea to raise a topic on this list. The problem is about font map
and encoding files.
Currently, there are several applications which can do something useful
with font map files in (more or less) dvips compatible syntax:
dvips, pdftex, gsftopk, mktexpk (parsing it for ps2pk), xdvi,
updmap (part of teTeX-beta)
A similar situation exists for encoding files (*.enc).
Currently, these applications misuse something like the TEXPSHEADERS
path for this, which is not a good idea.
That's why Olaf and I suggest to extend the search library and to put
these files into their proper place. Suggestions are
texmf/fontmap
and
texmf/fontenc
I could well think of texmf/fontenc as a flat "one-directory" thing
whereas texmf/fontmap should have subdirectories in the same manner
as texmf/tex. A application specific subdirectory which is searched first
and a "generic" subdirectory wjich is searched after that.
How does this sound?
Thomas
