The `canonical example' is probably local images such as university crests. I guess these could live in (eg) texmf/tex/latex/sussex/ssxcrest.eps, but this does mean that if I ever wrote plain macros for sussex letters (OK, pretty unlikely!) then I'd be in trouble. Alan
