Thanks a lot, that's a good service. 

Unfortunately, I can't really utilize it for automatic transferal to
CTAN. (That's what I would like to do.) Anybody keeps such an
archive, too -- on a Unix system, accessible via anonymous ftp?

Or anybody out there with enough energy and time to fix mirror to
handle VMS file systems correctly? 0.5 :-)
