that explains your comment  about it being surrounded by tags, I can't
really think of any reasonable interpretation of the standards for
rendering html mail that would lead to that presentation, It should
either render as displayed math if it supports mathml or just render
the character data if it does not   or render the plain text version
of the message (which just has the latex)
