You caught a typo (read 1 not 0).  Now reread the 
corrected message.

In particular, if you agree that:

(namely pure number fontdimen 1) then the approach I 
sketched is the only one I know.

PS.  Incidentally I was slightly exagerating the simplicity of 
extracting an pure integer checksum from dimensions,
but the idea is OK.
