My problem was due to Linux's TrueColor display, which is what you
have when you invoke the X server with a depth of 16 (or more?).

You simply can't do overstrikes in TrueColor, unfortunately, just as
you cannot use Netscape's Java.  With a color depth of 8, both work fine.
