Some Miscellaneous MetaFont hacks

Rocky Bernstein's suggestion to use a temporary redefinition of end
to ensure that the mode_special information gets included even
when the font ends with end rather than bye sounds to me like a
winner.

Now, how can we get it across to contributors of mf source code
that the font_identifier and font_coding_scheme should
always be included.

It looks as if we need some sort of registry of known
font_coding_schemes so that thay will not proliferate 
unnecessarily.
