access to BoundingBox of glyphs from afm?

Hi,

is there any way in fontinst to access the BBox of glyphs from an afm file?
It may be helpful for compostion of accented glyphs. Until now I use a2ac
to do it, but it has some shortcomings, probably the bigest flaw is that it
cannot use glyphs from more than one font.
