TUG'16 excursions

For TUG 2016, we are offering a number of events before, during, and after the conference.

In addition to the scheduled excursions below, the Royal Ontario Museum has an exhibition of Dale Chihuly's glass works. Just a thought for the museum-minded.

We want to be prompt for excursion departures, which means: please be downstairs at the hotel at least 15 minutes before the departure time, so we can all load onto the bus in good time. Thanks.

Friday, July 22 - for early birds

Pavneet will be arriving at the hotel Friday afternoon. Anyone would would like to join up for dinner (around 19:30, Fine Asian Bowl, 271 Yonge St.), feel free to email the conference address (tug2016@tug.org) or contact him directly.

Saturday, July 23 - Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls

Bring a jacket and/or sweater. It can get noticeably cool by the Falls in the evening.

06:30 early morning run/walk to Queen's Park, about 4.5km. Pavneet welcomes anyone who might wish to join in a group run.
10:00 depart Bond Place on bus excursion.
12:00Château des Charmes tour and lunch (included!).
15:00depart Château.
17:00Niagara Falls, Hornblower Cruise.
19:00dinner: self-pay. Map of nearby restaurants and more.
21:00Niagara Falls, night illumination.
21:30depart Niagara.

Sunday, July 24 - Guelph

All are welcome at the conference reception Sunday evening, independent of coming on this tour!

Timing will probably shift from the below to have a longer visit at Porcupine's Quill.

08:30 depart Bond Place.
10:00Porcupine's Quill (Erin, Ontario). Artisanal publisher with a workflow of groff and a Heidelberg KORD press (tentative); principal Tim Inkster is attending the conference. A mill pond is also on the property, and Tim wrote and produced an engaging booklet on the mill's history (4.5mb). Just up the street, Holtom's Bakery is happy to accommodate those wishing coffee and/or snacks.
12:30StoneHammer Brewery (Guelph) tour.
14:00Buon Gusto (Guelph) for lunch: self-pay.
19:00Paramount Fine Foods (Toronto, 253 Yonge St.) conference reception: self-pay, no cover charge.

Monday, July 25 - Toronto baseball

Tickets for the baseball excursion are closed.

17:35 Walking group gather in lobby; the walk is approximately 1.7mi, perhaps 50min.
17:45 Walking group departs Bond Place, led by Pavneet (passing an architectural bonus: the Mies van der Rohe TD Bank complex). Subway, taxi, other travel per individual preferences—get your ticket from Pavneet beforehand.
19:30Game time at Rogers Centre, San Diego Padres at Toronto Blue Jays.

Tuesday, July 26 - bookshop, informal dinner

ca.18:00  browse Eliot's Bookshop; they've agreed to stay open for us beyond normal 7pm closing if desired.

Wednesday, July 27 - informal dinner

ca.18:00 Type and Tile Tour, Joe Clark. 3-5 subway stops with discussion of typesetting. No charge.

20:00music by blues artist Sue Foley, $10 separate charge.

Thursday, July 28 - typography

Things to bring: comfortable walking shoes, water bottle, sun protection. The typography tour will be by bus.

08:30 depart Bond Place.
09:00Toronto Reference Library. Visit will concentrate on three spaces: Special Collections, Arts, and Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS). Approximate schedule:
Group 1: 9:10-9:50 in Special Collections; 10-10:20 in Arts; 10:25-10:45 in HSS.
Group 2: 9:10-9:30 in HSS; 9:35-9:55 in Arts; 10:00-10:40 in Special Collections.
Coffee etc. available at Balzac's inside the library.
11:15depart library.
12:00tour of Ismaili Centre Toronto: architecture of Charles Correa (ArchDaily article, BBC video)
13:00lunch: boxed lunch provided, additional items available in coffee shop for self-pay.
14:00tour of Aga Khan Museum.
15:45depart Aga Khan.
17:00(approximate) return to hotel.
18:00bus departs Bond Place for banquet cruise.
18:30boarding for Mariposa banquet cruise: faq, directions and map of dock area.
19:00sailing. The banquet will include announcing the winners of the fountain pen auction.
22:00(approximate) return to dock. A bus will be available to return attendees to the hotel.

Friday, July 29 - Georgian Bay

The Georgian Bay excursion is closed.

Things to bring: sun protection for sure!; good walking shoes; sandals might be preferable. If desired, swimsuit and change of clothes: we'll be going to a small beachside park, anyone interested is welcome to swim in the fresh water.

11:00Georgian Bay: town of Thornbury, Blue Mountains region.
13:00lunch: self-pay.
15:00McMichael Art Gallery tour. Designed to give visitors a feel for the Canadian landscape, and how it was interpreted in painting by the acclaimed impressionists, The Group of Seven.
17:00depart.
