<h2>Welcome to TeX Live</h2> |
| 8 |
|
| 9 |
<p>The <strong>TeX Live</strong> software distribution offers a complete |
| 10 |
TeX system for a variety of GNU and Unix, Macintosh, Windows and other |
| 11 |
platforms. It encompasses programs for editing, typesetting, previewing |
| 12 |
and printing of TeX documents in many different languages, and a large |
| 13 |
collection of TeX macros and font libraries. |
| 14 |
|
| 15 |
<p>The distribution includes extensive general documentation about TeX, |
| 16 |
as well as the documentation for the included software packages. |
| 17 |
|
| 18 |
<p>For licensing information, please see the top-level <a |
| 19 |
href="../LICENSE.TL">LICENSE.TL</a> and <a |
| 20 |
href="../LICENSE.CTAN">LICENSE.CTAN</a> text files. |
| 21 |
|
| 22 |
<h3>Where to start</h3> |
| 23 |
|
| 24 |
<p>We strongly recommend that you read the TeX Live Guide before |
| 25 |
undertaking the installation. It includes step-by-step instructions, a |
| 26 |
description of the top-level directories, and more. |
| 27 |
|
| 28 |
<p>If you are installing from the DVD image, the Guide in English and |
| 29 |
all its translations are in the <a href="../texlive-doc">texlive-doc</a> |
| 30 |
subdirectory. |
| 31 |
|
| 32 |
<p>After installation, English versions of the Guide are in the <a |
| 33 |
href="../texmf-dist/doc/texlive/texlive-en">texmf-dist/doc/texlive/</a> |
| 34 |
hierarchy, in both <a |
| 35 |
href="../texmf-dist/doc/texlive/texlive-en/texlive-en.html">html</a> and <a |
| 36 |
href="../texmf-dist/doc/texlive/texlive-en/texlive-en.pdf">pdf</a> |
| 37 |
formats. Translations to other languages are also available under <a |
| 38 |
href="../texmf-dist/doc/texlive/">texmf-dist/doc/texlive</a>. |
| 39 |
|
| 40 |
<p>We also provide a list of <a href="../doc.html">links to the |
| 41 |
available PDF and HTML documentation</a> for the included packages and |
| 42 |
programs. |
| 43 |
|
| 44 |
<p>If you are installing from the Internet, the above links won't work. |
| 45 |
In that case, you can view the <a |
| 46 |
href="https://tug.org/texlive/doc.html">TeX Live documentation on the |
| 47 |
Internet</a>. |
| 48 |
|
| 49 |
<p>For a list of the most important changes in this year's release, |
| 50 |
see the <i>Release history</i> section at the end of the documentation. |
| 51 |
|
| 52 |
|
| 53 |
<h3>Installation</h3> |
| 54 |
|
| 55 |
<p>The installation script is named <tt>install-tl</tt> and is at the |
| 56 |
top level of the directory tree. You can invoke it with <tt>perl |
| 57 |
install-tl</tt>. On Windows, you can run the companion batch file, |
| 58 |
<tt>install-tl-windows.bat</tt>. On Macs, you will probably want to |
| 59 |
install via <a href="https://tug.org/mactex/">MacTeX</a>, which has its |
| 60 |
own native installer (it's also available on the DVD, next to the |
| 61 |
<tt>texlive/</tt> you're in now.) |
| 62 |
|
| 63 |
<p><tt>install-tl</tt> has two operation modes: |
| 64 |
|
| 65 |
<dl> |
| 66 |
<dt><b>-gui</b></dt> (default on Windows and Macs) which does a simple |
| 67 |
installation by default, using a graphical interface, but allows for |
| 68 |
advanced options if desired.<p> |
| 69 |
|
| 70 |
<dt><b>-no-gui</b></dt> (default on everything else) which provides for |
| 71 |
all available options, using a simplistic text interface.<p> |
| 72 |
|
| 73 |
</dl> |
| 74 |
|
| 75 |
<p>Post-installation package updates and other configurations are |
| 76 |
performed with the <tt>tlmgr</tt> (TeX Live Package Manager) program, |
| 77 |
which likewise has both GUI and text modes. |
| 78 |
|
| 79 |
<p>You can give the command-line option <tt>--help</tt> to both <a |
| 80 |
href="https://tug.org/texlive/doc/install-tl.html">install-tl</a> and <a |
| 81 |
href="https://tug.org/texlive/tlmgr.html">tlmgr</a> for detailed |
| 82 |
information on both programs. See the documentation links above for |
| 83 |
(much) more information. |
| 84 |
|
| 85 |
|
| 86 |
<h3>Links</h3> |
| 87 |
|
| 88 |
<p>Finally, a few related web pages, for your reference. These are not |
| 89 |
included in TeX Live: |
