<div>Ulrike, the problem is that if I use the "other" or "other*" option, then the hyphenation options for the whole reference are switched, which is not the desired output (see the quotation marks and the absence of spacing after "In" for example):  </div>

Your example bib-entries are much too long, and as you can see from<br>the comments you didn't describe your actual problem.<br>
But your input of the french entry is wrong: Don't add spaces before<br>the punctuations (" ensemble :" should be " ensemble:"). This spaces<br>are inserted by xelatex and pdflatex. Also change the hyphenation<br>


key to  hyphenation = {french}.<br>
If you want that the french entry uses the french spaces before the<br>punctuation but not the british one use as option "babel=other" or<br>"babel=other*". babel=hyphen will only change the hyphenation rules,<br>


which means that every entry use the french spaces (as french is<br>your main language).<br>
