<div dir="ltr">Thanks to everyone who replied to my query. Times Nes Roman has worked pretty well (though the combining diacritics aren't as tight as I'd prefer) and I'll give the SIL fonts a try eventually.<br>

<div dir="ltr">I'm sorry for this super-basic question, but I'm new to xetex and just can't figure out the answer from the documentation. I'm trying to input a number of phonetic symbols (glottal stops and thetas, for example) in Hoefler Text among other fonts and end up with a box with an X through the middle in the PDF. Am I supposed to be inputting the symbols directly or is there some method of inputting the Unicode code?<br>
