In this modified tarball that you had sent, it has the following:

\newfontfamily{\englishfont}{Liberation Sans}
\newfontfamily{\tamilfont}[Script=Tamil,Mapping=tex-text,AutoFakeSlant=0.15]{Lohit
Tamil Classical}

\setdefaultlanguage{tamil}
\setotherlanguage{english}

All the page numbers are in Arabic numerals.

Is it possible to use Roman numerals for the \frontmatter and Arabic
numerals for the \mainmatter? How can this be achieved with
polyglossia package?

SK
