If users are to be pushed into using XeTeX, then those users are
entitled to expect that XeTeX will support all of the features that
earlier, more primitive, 8-bit TeX engines such as PdfTeX supported.
And PdfTeX supports \pdfmdfivesum, along with a whole slew of other
primitives that are currently missing from XeTeX :

> - \pdfescapestring
> - \pdfescapename
> - \pdfescapehex
> - \pdfunescapehex
> - \pdfuniformdeviate
> - \pdfnormaldeviate
> - \pdffilemoddate
> - \pdffilesize
> - \pdffiledump
> - \pdfrandomseed
> - \pdfsetrandomseed
