And if you go from PDF 1.5 down to PDF 1.4 it will be even worse. The
problem is that more efficient compression algorithms are not
supported in older versions. My book with a lot of colour photographs
required more than 2 GB when prepared as PDF/X-1a but was of
reasonable size when prepared as PDF 1.5 and they were able to use it.
