[XeTeX] XeTeX, XeTeXpicfile, and transparency

Even if you don't actually load the packages, it may be worthwhile to
examine the source code of the packages to see how they accomplish these
tasks, and then imitate their techniques in your own environment.  The
packages could be useful in that sense.  I think some of the low-level
features of the XeTeX engine are only really documented in the source code
of the engine and packages, and if you're comfortable working in a Plain
TeX environment, the package source code may be easier to understand than
the engine source code.
