With the fontconfig package you should have received the file /usr/X11/share/doc/fontconfig/fontconfig-user.html (or in some similar path). It explains some details of fc-list/fc-match etc. You could try:

	fc-list : file spacing fullname | grep -i spacing

Whether a font is useful for tying maths can be judged when you know which glyphs it contains. Stephen Hartke wrote an article upon free fonts for maths. You can read it: "texdoc survey".
