[XeTeX] IPA characters

The standardly used font for IPA used by linguists is the SIL fonts available here:  

<http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?&cat_id=FontDownloadsIPA>

These fonts all work with XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX; the same site also has various input methods for the more obscure characters.
