[XeTeX] Customizing footnote markers

Dear Phillip,
This:

> \long \def \@makefntext #1%
>

>

> 
> \makebox [0pt][r]{\@thefnmark.\,}#1%
> 
> }
> 
> \makeatother

triggers the following error message:

> ! Argument of \@makefntext has an extra }.
> 
> <inserted text> 
> 
> \par 

I've tried to remove curly brackets but to no avail.
