Thanks for great summary! It'd be nice to put the summary to a XeTeX wiki,
but the only one I have found (xetex.tk) seems read only.

My use case is an application of Quartz filters. A document has a lot of
images (PDF format, some text plus 1200dpi photos). The generated PDF is
of 300 Mb. If I apply the Quartz filter "Reduce File Size" to rescale
bitmaps to 300dpi, the size is less then 10Mb.

With xdv2pdf I could apply the filter during PDF generation and
immediately get 10 Mb PDF. With xdvipdfmx, I have to generate 300Mb first,
and then re-filter the PDF. Probably it is not a problem, but it somehow
bothers me.
