Actually I think it's much easier to save the archive somewhere, say,
in the download folder or in /tmp, and then to cd to /usr/local/
texlive/texmf-local. There, on the command line, it should be enough
to invoke

	sudo unzip /path/to/archive.zip

The archive's contents should be follow TDS, so after removing the
README file the software should be installed, no tar needed. It might
also work to put in Finder the downloaded archive into /usr/local/
texlive/texmf-local and double-clicking it there might invoke the
dialog that asks for elevated privileges to be allowed to extract the
archive's contents.

The described following steps (font installation directory and font
files installation, texhash, updmap-sys) are still required.
