Hi Florian:

I don't have v 1.1.1 but v. 1.0.2 but I get the same extra space with 
\textitalian as you. The quick fix is to eliminate the space before 
\textitalian (at least it works here).

The other problem I can't produce ... everything is Hoefler Text.
