[XeTeX] fontspec: loading different shapes/scales of one font as different font instances?

I don't understand the question, sorry.
fontspec provides

\newfontfamily\foo[<options>]{<font name>}

You can use this as many times as you like with whatever different 
options you like. Is there something missing?
