Create a package to change the default fonts..? 

Apart from the fact that I have no clue how I should go about doing
that, I would assume that having a few CJK characters (or other
non-ASCII stuff) inside a US English document is not something so
outlandish that other users have not run into this problem before me and
that such a package is already available (tested, stable, maintained).

More likely he belatedly came to the conclusion that the current version
of the asciidoc/a2x tool chain was not Unicode ready. 

After all, if I understand it correctly, the dblatex manual states under
'Mixing Languages' that, well.. you can't have it. :-)

Looks like it's going to be a lot easier to kiss my wingdings and box
drawings good-bye for now.
