Under Snow Leopard several system wide fonts (e.g., Hoefler Text) were converted from ttf to ttc and the original xdvipdfmx failed. Fortunately xdv3pdf still worked. Jonathan fixed up xdvipdfmx and it worked with the ttc fonts until I tried it under 10.6.2 where xdvipdfmx fails again. When I then tried to use xdv2pdf I got empty pdf files (the preview screen comes up but contains nothing). So now we don't have a (temporary) work around except to switch to fonts that work.
