[XeTeX] lacking precomposed character

Yes - it would make sense to have \leavevmode at the start of \overstrike
and then it would always work. The code is very hamfisted - done in my
first few weeks of acquaintance with The TeXBook (decades, or at least
lustra, ago...) - and I've never produced a neater version or attempted to
make it more robust. But it's surprising how often it's got me out of an
awkward situation, particularly (in pre-XeTeX days) with superimposed
diacritics, since it can be nested, with \raise \hbox commands as one of the
elements - so you can have macrons and acutes piling up, for example.
